Bringing a unique seaside property up to date
Our clients wanted to transform this characterful but poorly maintained cottage into a comfortable seaside retreat. The Practice was instructed to restore, refurbish and extend this Grade II Listed Building on the sea front in Lyme Regis. Ground level behind the house was very nearly the same as the internal first floor due to the steepness of this part of the town so the radical design solution involved the creation of a subterranean kitchen set into the hillside – a large rooflight successfully makes this extension a bright and welcoming space. A new family bathroom was constructed above the kitchen and comprised an oak clad timber frame beneath a zinc roof to provide a contrast to the original building. The remainder of the interior was sensitively updated to create a contemporary, highly finished beachfront home.
